BRIEF:
For this project the brief was to create short film about a robot experiencing nerves before a big performance. The goal for this project is to convey as much of that nervous emotion as possible to the viewer, using an inanimate object (this being the robot). The deliverables for this project had to include; A final rendered short film, 2 x A3 promotional posters at 300Dpi, 1 SketchFab viewable 3D character and 1 SketchFab viewable 3D asset. My timeframe for this project was 6 months.
HOW I MADE IT:
With this being one of the biggest projects I’ve ever done, I began with detail research, covering things like; how to physically convey emotion, what makes an environment stressful and how to use animation and art styles
to accentuate those elements. After that I moved into creating sketches of Character Design, Floorplans, assets and storyboards. These helped a lot in getting my ideas out of my head and onto a viewable image. Once all the
preproduction was done, I moved into modelling. To do this I brought my sketches in to Autodesk Maya to use as a direct reference in 3D. I then began by using simple privatives to get the core silhouette of my mesh, before
using a wide range of techniques to add detail to each model. After that I moved into Adobe Substance Painter, using mostly black masks and decals to texture the meshes.
Once the models were finished I brought my character into Maximo to rig it and apply downloadable animations to it. Next, I brought everything into Unreal Engine 5 where I built my environment and brought everything together.
I used Unreal’s built in tools to light, animate and render off each shot in the film. With that done I used Davinci Resolve to edit everything, add my own voice acting and use licensed sounds and music to create a soundscape
for the film.
Finally, I used Adobe Photoshop to create the promotional posters along with SketchFab so you can view my character and microphone in 3D space.
I also want to add that this description is a brief summary of the project and not a detailed step by step tutorial, as there were a ton of extra things I did throughout the project that I can’t cover without making this description thousands of words long.
