Deliverables

[Full Poster]
Process

BRIEF:
For this project there was no brief, I just had a cool idea for a concept poster inspired by the a recent Jurassic World trailer. This idea featured a t-rex in the process of assassinating some unexpecting soldiers through a wall of smoke.
HOW I MADE IT:
To start, I began by collecting some assets from google images, with the main focus being to find images with as consistent a point of view and lighting setup as possible. Doing this will make them easier to blend later on. With all of the assets found, I started composing them onto the canvas using the path in the background image as a guide for where the viewers eyes would go. Next, I moved onto blending everything together. To do this I used a few techniques, the first being exposure masks. These masks help me paint highlights and shadows on all of the separate assets to give them consistent lighting. The second technique I used was cutting out elements of the background
like bushes and trees, before placing them in front of the soldiers and t-rex. This helps tons in making them feel like they’re actually interacting with the forest around them. The final technique I used in the blending process was creating tons of separate layers of smoke, all with slightly different colors, using a smoke brush. I could then organize these layers, at different levels of opacity, between the other assets to frame the poster and give the illusion of depth. Because the further “back” in the image you go the thicker the smoke will get. The smoke also helps a lot in creating a mood for the image.
The final step was then to add some finishing touches, like color correction, giving a strong blue tone to the poster. This makes the image more eye catching to a passing viewer and makes the poster feel more viscous, cold and all round uneasy. I also created a version with the Jurassic World logo and credits to see what it would look like as an actual poster. I also want to add that this description is a brief summary of the project and not a detailed step by step tutorial, as there were a lot of extra things I did throughout the project that I can’t cover without making this
description thousands of words long.
