Deliverables

BRIEF:
There was no brief for this project. I just had an idea to create a psychedelic, grunge design inspired by an image I found of myself laying on the floor of a friend’s apartment. The concept of the image would feature a UFO abducting me, surrounded by
interesting patterns and textures.

HOW I MADE IT:
With a strong vision for this piece I began by finding an image of a UFO from google images. This would end up being one of the only assets I used across the whole project. With the UFO image found I placed it at the top corner of the canvas, before tracing my hero image, using the pen tool. While doing this, I made sure I used a messy technique to create random intrusions and extrusions for the cut out of the image, this adds to the psychedelic nature of the final design. With everything laid out, I moved onto blending things together. To do this I used a mixture of exposure masks for the highlights and shadows, some glow on the UFO’s lights and a black and white mask around my person. This mask would later help to accentuate the light beam from the UFO.

Next up, I added some grunge textures over the image to give the overall piece some more visual chaos, before adding a light ray overlay that I color matched using hue and saturation masks. This would act as the UFO’s abduction beam. Finally, I used a Camera Raw filter to accentuate the colors and bring up the texture of the entire image.
I also want to add that this description is a brief summary of the project and not a detailed step by step tutorial, as there were a lot of extra things I did throughout the project that I can’t cover without making this description thousands of words long.
